The Singapore Dragon Boat Festival (SDBF) is one of the oldest dragon boat races in Singapore. The other being the Singapore River Regatta that has now evolved into the Singapore Regatta Waterfest. SDBF has retained its structure and racing format since its inception. The only change has been the racing venue and distance. Formerly a sea event raced at 800m distance, at the sea off East Coast Park, SDBF is now raced in the calm conditions of Singapore’s pristine reservoirs – the cityscape picturesque Marina Reservoir or the deep heartland Bedok Reservoir. It has also adopted the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) international standard premier racing distance of 500m.
Aside from watching dragon boats and their crews perform on the waves, Dragon Boat Festival involves other things like delicious foods. Triangular rice dumplings with tasty fillings are especially popular during the celebrations. Fillings include pork, water chestnuts, mushrooms, melons, and sweet palm sugar syrup.
